Soon after entering World War I the United States Army decided to create a tank corps. The man they chose to lead this operation was Captain George S. Patton who was single-handedly responsible for its development. His new brigade was trained in French tanks, as the U.S. Army had only two tanks, one of which was steam driven! Throughout their involvement in the war the Tank Corps used British Mark V and French FT-17 tanks. The wildcat, "Black Tom," was the mascot of the new, proud and powerful unit and he is pictured here personifying the Corps' motto "Treat 'em rough!" "In this improbable version of tank warfare, the flaming colors, the Black Tomcat mascot with its vicious claws . . . project an image of sexual energy" (Paret p. 56). Rawls 254, Theofiles 14, Paret 76, Borkan p. 45.
