Chicago printmaker and art historian, Anna McCullough Tyler was born in Evanston, IL and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at La Esmeralda Art Center in Mexico City, where Elizabeth Catlett became her mentor. Both a teacher and board member at the South Side Community Art Center, she met fellow artist and future husband Al Tyler at an art exhibit at the center. Tyler was a founding member of Sapphire & Crystals, an African-American women's art collective in Chicago, and was included in Samella Lewis and Ruth Waddy's 1971 survey Black Artists on Art, Volume 2. Her artwork is in the collection of the DuSable Museum of African American History, Chicago. Lewis/Waddy pp. 33-34, 139.
