Brewster (1870-1952) was the daughter of noted marine and landscape painter William Trost Richards (1833-1905). She learned to paint from her father and by age fourteen was exhibiting at the National Academy in New York. She continued her studies at the Cowles Art School, Boston, and the Arts Students League with John La Farge (1835-1910) and William Merritt Chase (1849-1916). She traveled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa before moving to Scarsdale, New York where she founded the Scarsdale Art Association. Her work is included in many public collections including The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio, The Museum of the City of New York, and Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge, among others.
