Additional Details

One of at least 2 variants of a proclamation dated 2 March 1710 announcing measures for the suppression of public disorder and the apprehension and prosecution of those responsible. This was apparently prompted by rioting over the trial of the demagogic Anglican clergyman Henry Sacheverell for seditious libel, following his inflammatory sermons attacking the policy of religious toleration espoused by the Whig government. Although the rioters supported Sacheverell, the proclamation singles out "Papists, Nonjurors, and other Enemies to our Title and Government" as culprits. ESTC T19677 locates only the copies at the British Library and the National Library of Scotland.
