ANNI ALBERS
GR 1.

Color screenprint on Arches, 1970. 510x409 mm; 20¼x16¼ inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 56/100 in pencil, lower margin. Published by Grippi Gallery, New York. A very good impression with strong colors.

According to Nicholas Fox Weber, in his introduction to the Guggenheim Museum's 1999 retrospective on the artist, Albers (1899-1994) became a printmaker late in her career and collaborated with leading printers to combine screenprinting with photo-offset lithography, as well as with other print media to create unprecedented, experimental works. Fox Weber wrote, "No wonder she so often quoted Kandinsky's, 'There is always an 'and'.' That verity certainly applied to her . . . Her faith in art, and the encapsulation of its possibilities was nothing short of marvelous." Weber/Danilowitz 71.
