Bohlin discusses the Carracci invlovement with caricature drawings or "ritratti carichi" such as the current work, noting that though the Carracci Academy has traditionally been considered the birthplace of or credited with the proloferation of early caricature very few examples of their drawings in this genre survive (Prints and Related Drawings by the Carracci Family<>, Washington, 1979, pp. 48 and 67, endnote 83).
