ANNIBALE CARRACCI
The Drunken Silenus (The Tazza Farnese).

Engraving, 1597-1600. 315 mm; 12 1/2 inches (diameter). Lily in a double circle with a Gothic letter C watermark. A very good impression of this extremely scarce engraving.

We have found only 3 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years.

Most of the impressions of this engraving were printed from a silver tazza or dish that was engraved by Carracci (1560-1609) for Cardinal Odoardo Farnese contemporaneously with the painting of the Farnese Palace ceiling. The tazza has survived and is now in the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples. Bartsch 18; Bohlin 19.
