During World War II, Italian poster artists, led by Gino Bocassile, generated a number of powerful anti-American propaganda images. Although unsigned, this image copies one of Bocassile's images, in which an American GI, depicted much like a gorilla, is looting Italy of its cultural heritage, by making off with a statue marked "2$." In this image, the marble statue seems almost alive and trying to ward of, the so-called "Liberator."
