For their sixth exhibition the Secession artists chose to illustrate a detail from a woodcut by Kikugawa Eizan, the great Japanese ukiyo-e artist. By highlighting Japanese art, the group is quite literally acknowledging the influence that Utamaro, and the Japanese wood block artists had on Western art at the end of the 19th century. Denscher p. 32.
