An American Navy recruitment poster either based on, or the model for, the famous British poster by Partridge, Take up the Sword of Justice. Rising up from the blue and green water, her dress like a wave, Columbia, in red, white and blue raises her fist and her sword in anger at the sinking ship and drowning people around her. The image represents the sinking of the Lusitania, in which 1200 people died, and which triggered outrage among Americans at the targeting of civilians by German U-boats.
