ANONYMOUS VESUVIUS AND THE GULF OF NAPLES. Circa 1937.
39 1/4x24 1/4 inches. Richter & Cie., Naples.
Condition A.
The first funicular railway rose up the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius in 1879. Not only did this train offer tourists an easier way of getting up the mountain, but it was also the inspiration for the beloved Italian song "Funiculì-Funiculà". In 1903 more tracks were layed, connecting the base of the funicular railway with a terminal in Pugliano. The railroad suffered several set backs throughout its lifetime, all as a result of volcanic activity. The system was shut down by the eruption of 1906 and then again in 1944.
