Almost as soon as it was "discovered" by Western civilization, in the middle of the 18th century, tourists began visiting this area of California. Situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite is known for her waterfalls, magnificent rock formations and giant sequoias. In 1864 President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Land Grant, which gave Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley to the state of California. This grant marked the first time that any nation had set up a wilderness preserve within her own borders. The area was declared a National Park in 1890. Pictured here is El Capitan.
