Additional Details

first edition. Anson was sent by the British crown to disrupt Spanish trading on the west coast of South America. The British were at war with Spain and it was hoped that the Spanish would be injured by the loss of the wealth pouring out of Peruvian mines. The narrative recounts Anson's exploits as compiled from his journals by the shipboard chaplain, Richard Walter. The volume underwent a number of editions and was probably the most popular maritime narrative of its century. Sabin 1625; Hill, pages 317-18.
