ANTOINE COYPEL
(Paris 1661-1722 Paris)
A Kneeling Woman with Outstretched Arms * Figure with a Robe.

Black and white chalk on blue laid paper, double-sided. 274x422 mm; 11x16 3/4 inches.

Provenance: Private collection, Rhode Island.

There is a similar chalk drawing on blue laid paper by Coypel, A Prostrated Man with his Hands Clasped over his Head (Study for the Sacrifice of Iphigenia), circa 1729, now in the British Museum, London, that is a study for a figure in the now lost painting of the same subject, completed soon before 1730, and known through a copy in tapestry. The study of the Seated Figure with a Robe on one side of the current drawing is similar to the figure to the left of the sacrificial pedestal of this now lost painting. The Kneeling Woman with Outstretched Arms may also be a study for a figure in Coypel's oil painting Athalie Expelled from the Temple, 1697, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
