The Exposition Maritime Internationale was a six-month long exhibition and celebration, which placed Bordeaux firmly at the center of the maritime world for its duration. The event was the brainchild of the Ligue Maritime Français, whose name is visible on the ship's stern. Pictured in the background is the Grand Palais, constructed for the event, whose towers actually had elevators to take visitors to the top. Ponchin, a painter, had work exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in Paris in 1904 and 1906, which likely led to the commission for this poster.
