ANTON LAVINSKY (1893-1968) [THE WINGS OF COLD.] 1926.
42x28 1/2 inches.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tears in top right and bottom margin affecting image.
Lavinsky, who both studied and taught at Vkutemas and who was member of the Inkhuk (Institute of Artistic Culture), dedicated a good part of his career to poster design. His work varied from images for Rosta (Russian News Agency) to film posters. Like his colleagues the Stenberg Brothers and Nikolai Prusakov, Lavinsky here is playing with cut-out images, both photographic and graphic, to build surprising montages that have become the signature of the Russian avant-garde. Here, against an orange background, with a man in a flying machine and the shadow of an airplane, Lavinsky is at his best.
