ANTONIO DA CANAL, IL CANALETTO
Landscape with a Tower and Two Ruined Pillars.

Etching, circa 1740. 146x211 mm; 57/8x81/4 inches, small margins. Second state (of 2). A very good, dark and evenly printed impression of this scarce print.

The open, freely drawn style of this and other landscape etchings by Canaletto (1697-1768), known for his topographical views in and around Venice, approximates pen and ink drawing and as such as is similar to many of Rembrandt's landscape prints. Bromberg describes the pen and ink drawing quality of Canaletto's etchings in a way that seems suitable to Rembrandt's landscape prints as well, "There is nothing casual about these etchings, the final result is meticulously sought after," (Bromberg, Canaletto's Etchings, San Francisco, 1993, p. 5). DeVesme 25; Bromberg 28.
