ANTONIO DA CANAL, IL CANALETTO
S. Giustina in prà della Valle.

Etching, circa 1749. 304x429 mm; 12x16 7/8 inches, wide margins. Second state (of 2). Ex-collection Jean Ehrmann (Lugt 3581, verso); and unknown collector, ink stamp verso (not in Lugt). A very good, dark and well-inked impression with strong contrasts.

S. Giustina in prà della Valle together with Prà della Valle form the left and right sides, respectively, of Canalaetto's two-part view of one of the largest public squares in the world, known today as Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, in Padua. S. Giustina in prà della Valle, the left side of Canaletto's panoramic etched view, shows the Scuola delle Comari and the Basilica of S. Giustina, with six of its eight domes visible. Though Canaletto designed the large etched view as a whole, he divided the composition into two separate plates and no record exists as it ever having been printed as one undivided plate. DeVesme 8; Bromberg 7.
