ANTONIUS GUTHSCHMIDT (1887- ?) KONINKLIJKE LUCHTVAART MAATIJ / THE FLYING DUTCHMAN. 1924.
39 3/4x30 inches, 101x76 cm. Van de Ven, Den Haag.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image; creases in image.
This image, "effectively exploits the myth of the Flying Dutchman. His wooden ship traverses a storm-tossed sea while its navigator is called upon to witness that, with the aeroplane, fiction has become fact. In other words, the modern Hollander could indeed fly" (Looping the Loop p. 123). There are at least three variations of this image, including one all in Dutch, with even the name, "Flying Dutchman" written in Dutch on the ship. There is a variation all in English, "Royal Dutch Air Service Cy. / Fiction becomes Fact." And then this version in Dutch with the English name on the ship. The text at the bottom here actually translates into, "No Myth but Reality." Modern Dutch pl 54 (var) , Looping the Loop pl. 80, Artistry p. 35 (var).
