In 1951 the founders of Aperture, Minor White, Nancy Newhall, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, Beaumont Newhall, and Barbara Morgan, attended the first Aspen Photographic Conference. It was there that the idea for a serious periodical devoted to photography developed. White went on to edit the magazine, filling its pages with images and articles about photographic technique and the art of photography.
