Blatas (1908-1999) was of Lithuanian-Jewish descent. An artistic prodigy, he left Lithuania at age 15 for France and by his early 20s had become the youngest member of the School of Paris, along with such luminaries as Picasso, Braque and Léger. He fled Nazi-occupied France in 1941, settling in New York and becoming a U.S. citizen.
