the famous counterfeit edition, based on the first edition of 1570, with copperplate copies of the original woodcuts. This edition was published presumably by G.B. Pasquali through the bequest of Joseph Smith (1682-1770), British Consul at Venice. Smith was a well-known collector and connoisseur who partnered with Pasquali to print limited editions of fine replica copies of master works in his collection. Ex-collection Buchanan Charles, with his ink signature on pastedown along with his lengthy penciled notes and quote from Goethe (from Italian Journey, trans. by Auden and Mayer, NY 1965), praising Smith's edition, a copy of which he acquired on his Italian tour in 1786.
