ARISTIDE MAILLOL
Baigneuse Debout<>.

Bronze with pale golden patina, circa 1900. 660 mm; 26 inches (height). With the artist's initials on the base. Ex-collection Lefevre Gallery, London, and Galerie Flechtheim, Berlin, with the latter's inventory number B10158, and with the gallery labels adhered inside the base. Published by Vollard, Paris, and cast later.

According to Johnson, Vollard did not adhere to Maillol's request to limit the editions of his sculpture to 10 or fewer. Instead, Vollard kept an example of each bronze Maillol produced at his gallery and, when a collector showed interest in a work, he ordered a cast made. Therefore, later casts of Maillol's sculptures are prevalent and edition numbers are difficult to ascertain. See George, Aristide Maillol<>, New York, 1965, p. 30 (another cast illustrated), and Johnson, Ambroise Vollard, Editeur<>, New York, 1977, pp. 40-42.
