ARISTIDE MAILLOL
La Vague.

Woodcut printed in black on warm cream Japan paper, 1895-98. 170x196 mm; 6 3/4x7 3/4 inches, full margins. Second state (of 2). Initialed and numbered 1/60 in pencil, lower margin. Ex-collection Henri M. Petiet, ink stamp verso (see Lugt 2021a). A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce, early woodcut, with strong contrasts.

There were eight works exhibited in the Armory Show by French Catalan sculptor Aristide Maillol (1861-1944). They included one terra-cotta bas-relief, one terra-cotta standing woman and six drawings which were all lent by Galerie Émile Druet, Paris. Though no prints by Maillol were included in the Armory Show, the medium was nonetheless a significant component of his artistic practice. As with his drawings, the female figures in his prints convey a weight and volume that reflect his mastery of sculpture. Guérin 8.
