According to Johnson, Vollard did not adhere to Maillol's request to limit the editions of his sculpture to 10 or fewer. Instead, Vollard kept at his gallery an example of each bronze Maillol produced and, when a collector showed interest in a work, he ordered a cast made. Therefore, later casts of Maillol's sculptures are prevalent and edition numbers are difficult to ascertain.
