Turkish-born and Greek-raised Kaldis (1899-1979) was associated with the Abstract Expressionists and known for his robust personality and Mediterranean-inspired, lyrical paintings. In the 1940s, he was the first living American artist to have his work purchased by the Albert C. Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania.
