ARMAND RASSENFOSSE (1862-1934) HUILE RUSSE. 1897.
38 x 25 inches. A. Benard, Liege.
Condition B+: water stains in lower margin; restored loss in upper left corner; repaired tear through bottom margin into text.
Rassenfosse worked with his parents in their shop selling Oriental wares until he was thirty. It was a meeting with Felicien Rops which set him on the road to becoming an engraver and lithographer, and what he learned from the great lithographer he applied in his own manner, becoming a master of the art form in his own right and a key member of the group of Belgian artists based in Liege. His style revolves around his delicate sense of drawing and his ability to marry flat and half tones together in a fluid image. His work also appeared in France, as he was called upon to design two posters for La Plume. Wember 677, Reims 1498.
