ARMIN HOFMANN (1920- ) STADT THEATER BASEL / 1965-66. 50x35 1/4 inches, 127x89 1/2 cm. Wasserman AG, Basel. Condition A. Paper. Hofmann studied in Zurich and later settled in Basel, where he opened a studio and started teaching. He was a master typographer and, over the years, developed a design standard based on consistent and rational principles aimed at creating timeless images. The City Theatre of Basel employed Hofmann to design their posters for many years. Working just in black and white, he created dramatic images - in this case, evoking dance, music and drama. "He does not see rational and emotional approaches as mutually exclusive - because he appreciates the inherent laws of design with his senses as well" (Hofmann p. 5).
