Hofmann studied in Zurich, then settled in Basel, where he opened a studio and started teaching. He was a master typographer and, over the years, built a design standard based on consistent and rational principles aimed at creating timeless images. This International Typographic Style was developed in Switzerland, but became increasingly popular around the world in the 1950s and 1960s. Hofmann worked for the City Theatre of Basel for many years. Working just in black and white, Hofmann created dramatic images, in this case quite symbolic of a visit to the theatre. "He does not see rational and emotional approaches as mutually exclusive - because he appreciates the inherent laws of design with his senses as well" (Hofmann p. 5). Hofmann p. 7.
