ARNOLD FRIEDMAN
L'Arc de Triomphe.

Oil on board, 1905. 238x187 mm; 9 3/4x7 3/4 inches. Acquired directly from the artist, thence by descent to the current owner.

Friedman was born in 1874 in Corona, Queens, to Hungarian immigrant parents. A hobbyist painter, he worked as a post office clerk for some 30 years before becoming active in the WPA Federal Arts Project and subsequently entering the Art Students League under the tutelage of Kenneth Hayes Miller and Robert Henri. In 1905, a trip to Paris proved to be ground breaking for Friedman's stylistic development.
