ARNOLD NEWMAN (1918-2006)
Portrait of the artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889-1953). 1941; printed 1960s.
Silver print, the image measuring 7⅝x9¾ inches (19.4x24.8 cm.), the mount 17x14 inches (43.2x35.6 cm.), with Newman's signature, title, and negative date in pencil on mount recto, and his copyright stamp on mount verso.

Newman's photograph of Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1893–1953) is a compelling image of the Japanese-born artist and an early example of his acclaimed "Artist Series" that he began in 1941. Kuniyoshi emigrated to America from Japan as a teenager, rising to prominence in the New York art world during the 1920s to become one of the most esteemed artists in America between the two world wars. In 1948, Kuniyoshi became the first living artist chosen to have a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
