Born in Germany, Rönnebeck (1885-1947) immigrated to the United States in 1922. Trained as an architect he chose art as a profession and, prior to coming to the U.S., trained and traveled through Europe befriending many of the artists of the day and become close friends with Marsden Hartley (1877-1943, see lot 91). He remained in New York for only a short period though produced a body of lithographs of the skyscraping city, of which Wall Street is one of the most iconic. Having visited Mabel Dodge Luhan (1879-1962) in New Mexico, and meeting his future wife at her home, he spent much of his later career in Colorado and New Mexico.
