ARNRID BANNIZA JOHNSTON (1895-1972) FOR THE REGENTS PARK ZOO / UNDERGROUND. 1930.

Johnston was a sculptor, painter, illustrator and poster designer. Throughout all of the mediums in which she worked, her love of animals was always apparent. She also had a wonderful sense of humor, too, as seen here in this role-reversing, amusing social satire, in which animals are visiting human specimens in the zoo. The exhibitions are each caged off according to their walk of life or profession. Johnston cleverly encapsulates who you might see while visiting the zoo, playfully switching the roles of viewers and viewees.
