ARROWSMITH, AARON. A Map of the United States of North America. Large engraved case map dissected and laid on two sheets of linen, each sheet 630x1450 mm; hand-colored by state; remarkably pristine, slight oxidation and fading of blue pigments; original linen backing; original marbled paper slipcase, with onlaid label of William Faden, professionally reinforced in a few places. a very nice example. London: A. Arrowsmith, 1802 [Watermarked 1811]

Additional Details

This example corresponds with Stevens & Tree 79(e) and Rumsey 2098 in both its imprint and JWhatman 1811 watermark. The map is hand-colored in the same scheme as Rumsey's copy, and they have the same Faden label ("Sold by W. Faden Geographer to His Majesty and to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales No. 5 Charing Cross.") We concur with Rumsey that this state was seemingly issued later than 1808 - the date proposed in Comparative Cartography.
