Additional Details

After graduating from Cornell University in 1903, Dove moved to New York City and worked as an illustrator for various periodicals for five years. Only upon returning to New York in 1909 after a two year trip to France did he completely embrace nonrepresentational imagery that marked him as one of the founders of modern Abstract Expressionism. This charming illustration, which was likely done for a magazine or newspaper story, shows a distressed doctor, clutching his golf bag, sitting on a couch with a mother and her young son pointing at him with amusement.
