ARTIST UNKNOWN L'ORA. 1910.
801/2x41 inches. G. Ricordi, Milan.
Condition B: restored losses and discoloration in margins; repaired tears and creases in margins and image.
Although this poster is advertising a daily Sicilian political newspaper, the artist has chosen an ethereal woman, only barely covering her charms, as his messenger. She is carrying an arrow, which may indicate the pointed information carried in the publication, or may merely be an extenuation of whatever cupid's fantasy she is intended to evoke. Telegraph wires are decoratively incorporated within the text, which was a standard device in that era used to show how cutting-edge periodicals were and how quickly they could receive their information. Despite being anonymous, the colors are extremely eye-catching and the figure is exceptionally well rendered. Menegazzi p. 62.
