A previously unrecorded, gorgeous, decadent fin-de-siecle poster. The image of cupid, standing on an open case of champagne, pouring drinks for all the ladies waiting with their glasses ready, holds the promise of glorious debauchery to follow. And yet their drink of choice, the subject of the poster, remains somewhat of a mystery. St. Hillaire and St. Florent are not villages included in the champagne appellation, and no reference to Louis Despas can be found in any reference book. The answer lies in the crest, announcing that the brand won a prize for "Royal Doux", in Reims 1889. "Royal Doux" was a champagne substitute that contained added sugar, indicating that all of these revelers will have a serious hangover in the morning!
