Havinden was a graphic designer who joined the Crawford Agency in London when he was only eighteen. Just a few years later, he became the company's creative director. He "endorsed the ideas of the Bauhaus, such as the use of asymmetry and white space as part of a dynamic composition" (V&A). Havinden and Terence Prentis designed this geometric, tricolor design for Plymouth that was so well-liked by Chrysler that the company commissioned another similar poster from the pair the next year.
