Additional Details

After an early career in the theater, in the 1890s Atget began taking photographs using a large-format camera and heavy glass plate negatives--an anachronistic technique he employed for 30 years--advertising his pictures as "documents pour artistes." His favorite time of day was early morning, when the light was particularly clear and the streets empty. Although his images were mostly purchased by painters, today his work is prized by photographic collectors and afficionados of the City of Light. A master of the quotidian, Atget's scenes of shop windows, architectural facades, and interiors infuse the everyday with order and poetry.
