first lyon edition of the first Latin translation, which was originally published the same year in Venice. Dating from the early 3rd century A.D., the Deipnosophistae describes a series of imaginary banquets at which scholarly guests discuss a wide variety of subjects with a particular emphasis on food and wine. The book is a rich source of information on ancient Greek culinary practices and recipes, social customs, and sexual behavior, and contains extensive excerpts from older literary works now lost.
