AUBREY BEARDSLEY (1872-1898) THE YELLOW BOOK. 1895.
14 3/4x11 inches. John Lane, London.
Condition A.
Beardsley's sensitive and elegant style, using solid, flat blacks and elaborate outlining and intricate details, was strongly influenced by Albrecht Dürer, William Morris, and Japanese prints. In his short career he became art director for The Yellow Book<> at its inception in 1894, founded The Savoy<>, illustrated numerous books designed posters and other printed matter. Beloved and reviled in Britain, Beardsley's decorative Art Nouveau style, considered by many to be vulgar, was appreciated in America. The stylised woman and mise en page<> he invented for The Yellow Book<> was used in many different ways, including this small poster, intended to be used inside bookstores, listing the contents of each issue. Although the magazine was British, it became popular in the United States. The poster was subsequently printed and used in America, where it appears as a slightly larger variation, with separate vignettes depicting the pictures that were on the cover of the Yellow Book<> for that particular month. This one was for Vol. VI. 1895. DFP I, 6 (var).
