"Bunches of Grapes and Leaves." Ornamental device for Book I, chapter XXII on page 41 of "Le Morte d'Arthur" (London: J.M. Dent, 1893-94), created in Autumn 1892. Pen and ink on paper with thin tissue paper backing. 49x50 mm; 1 3/4x2 inches. Inlaid to size on 9 3/4x7 1/2-inch sheet with hand-drawn borders, "567" in pencil on verso. Provenance: J.M. Dent to Erhard Weyhe Collection, Sotheby's New York, December 15, 1988 to Jack and Caroline Milne.

Additional Details

The grapevine represents intoxication and acanthus leaves reflect the fine arts and artifice. This ornament is repeated in Book II, chapter XV, page 72 and five additional places. Zatlin 462.
