Additional Details

In 1849, John Woodhouse Audubon, the son of John James Audubon, travelled westward to Mexico and California intending to capture images of the West and the Gold Rush. When he returned to New York, Audubon devised a plan to issue 40 lithographs after his drawings in 10 parts on a subscription basis. After completing the first part with 4 plates, lack of interest in the project ceased the publication. There are less than a dozen known extant copies of the completed first part of what must be one of the scarcest American color plate books.
