AUGUST BIEHLE (1885-1979) COSTUME BAL MASQUE. 1937.
211/4x131/2 inches. Continental Litho., Cleveland.
Condition A-: vertical and horizontal folds.
An Indian woman in an elaborate costume is dancing behind an array of other costume-clad celebrants. The diagonal format is reminiscent of some of the Bal poster produced by Jules Cheret in Paris around the turn of the century. "One of northeast Ohio's most prolific and distinguished artists, August Biehle, Jr. combined masterful draftsmanship with a superior sense of design. He assimilated aspects of German Expressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism, and moved skillfully between a range of styles, from Jugendstil . . . to American Scene realism" (Canton Museum of Art, Exhibition archives).
