AUGUST MOSCA
The Red Tank.

Oil on canvas, 1935. 683x480 mm; 27x19 inches. Signed in oil, lower left, and titled and dated in ink, verso.

Ex-collection private collection of Betty and Douglas Duffy (owners of Bethesda Art Gallery); thence by descent to current owner, private collection, Houston.

Mosca (1905-2003) was born in Naples, Italy and immigrated to the United States in 1911 with his family. He studied at Yale University, the Pratt Institute, Grand Central School and the Art Students League. In 1937, he met Joseph Stella (1877-1946, see lots 94-98), whose geometric scenes of Lower Manhattan greatly influenced his work, and while he painted figural works and still lifes throughout his career, Mosca's best-known works depict New York City in a Futurist and semi-abstract style.
