Best known for being the progenitors of early movies, the Lumière Brothers (Auguste and Louis) were also very active in other areas of the arts and sciences. They are credited with inventing convenient dry photographic plates as well as the Autochrome (an early means of color photography). Their father, Antoine was an artist, so it is not surprising that one of the sons would also have an artistic bent in addition to his savvy business acumen. Lumière & Jougla merged together in 1911, the resulting company was known as U.P.I., Union Photographique Industrielle.
