AUGUSTE RODIN
Antonin Proust.

Drypoint on Japan paper, 1884-88. 238x179 mm; 9 3/8x7 inches, full margins. The deluxe edition of 100 on Japan paper, before letters. Fifth state (of 7). Numbered "40" in pencil, lower right. From Pan, with the blind stamp (Lugt 2011a, lower right). A very good, richly-inked impression.

According to Thorson, "Two letters from Antonin Proust to Rodin [1840-1917] postponing sittings establish that Rodin was working on the terra-cotta bust in March and April 1884. The [current] drypoint may date to that year or the year following when a bronze cast of the bust was exhibited at the 1885 [Paris] Salon. Rodin, however, assigns the drypoint to the year 1888 in his letter to M. Bourcard, listing it as the last of three drypoint portraits [of Proust]." Delteil 10; Thorson 10.
