AUGUSTE RODIN
Etude de femme.

Brush and yellow ink and wash over pencil on cream wove paper. 253x325 mm; 10x127/8 inches. Signed and annotated in pencil, lower right recto. Ex-collection Malvina Hoffman, New York.

With a photograph authentication by Kurt Varnedoe, dated January 25, 1982.

A prodigious childhood artist, Hoffman (1887-1966) was enrolled in the Art Students League in New York at the age of 14. In 1910, she went with her mother to Paris, where she attempted repeatedly to become one of Rodin's students. After several years, she was finally admitted as a student in Rodin's studio. By 1915, she had set up her own studio in Paris and there became a well known sculptor and foundry specialist. She returned to New York later in life and continued to create sculpture until her death.
