AUGUSTE RODIN
Le Printemps.

Drypoint on vellum, 1882-88. 145x98 mm; 5 3/4x3 7/8 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower right. A superb, richly-inked impression.

We have found only two other impressions of this subject printed on vellum at auction in the past 30 years.

Provenance: Marcel Louis Guérin, Paris, with the ink stamp (Lugt 1872b, lower left recto); James Henry Lockhart, Pittsburgh, with the red ink stamp (Lugt 4387, lower left verso).

According to Thorson, "The drypoint Le Printemps is the reverse image of La Nuit, a motif from Rodin's [1840-1917] Pompeii vase made at Sèvres . . . Records at the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory show Rodin working on the vase on and off from December 1880, indicating that the drypoint could date from 1882." Delteil 4; Thorson 4.
