AUSTEN, JANE. Pride and Prejudice. Second Edition. 3 volumes. Half-titles present. 12mo, contemporary 1/4 tan calf with gilt-stamped spines, brown calf lettering pieces, all heavily scuffed with some loss; scattered light foxing and dog-eared corners, neat contemporary owner's ink signature at top of title-pages, another, also contemporary, in a heavier ink on front blanks (those leaves slightly loose in all volumes), Volume 1 has unobtrusive light creasing, clean tears, or tiny chips to margin near gutters, affecting first half of contents, thin wormhole to preliminaries of Volume 2, just barely hitting margin of title, 3-mm ink stain to fore edge of Volume 3, just affecting a few margins, and a small clean tear to P5. London: Printed for T. Egerton, 1813
A nice set of the less common second edition. According to Gilson, not too much is known about its publishing history. It does differ from the first edition in that it is entirely reset, resulting in occasional variations within the page. In addition, there are numerous small changes to spelling and punctuation and, occasionally, a change in wording (see Gilson A4 for list of alterations.).
